NIV Commentary Series - 1 & 2 Peter
These two letters of Peter were written to first century Christians needing clear instructions about their faith in Christ. By the leading of the Holy Spirit, these letters have remained timeless. No matter which period of church history one might want to discuss, these letters fit well. Christian character, holiness, the Day of Judgment, and the Second Coming are always important to the proper development of a Christian's faith.
First Peter was intended to encourage Christians to stand firm in their faith. There was a growing attitude among the Roman leaders that Christians were not going to fit into the Roman culture. Peter reminds his readers that no matter the cost, they should never let go of faith. In the final evaluation, God has given much more to every Christian than whatever this world might try to take away.
Second Peter may have been among the last written instructions of Peter. False teachers were allowing a downward spiral in moral standards. These teachers had convinced themselves that the Judgement Day and the Second Coming were no longer relevant. Peter reminds his readers that God will complete His plan; therefore remain faithful.
